GASCo Director Mike Barnard is appointed to be the new CAA General Avaition Programme Manager. Commenting on the appointment Andrew Haines, CAA Chief Executive, said: “GA is an extremely important sector of UK civil aviation and Mike’s appointment is part of our commitment to work more closely with GA to ensure that our oversight is both appropriate and helping improve safety. Mike is obviously passionate about GA and this enthusiasm, coupled with his industry background, will help to ensure the success of the programme.”

The Royal Aeronautical Society's General Aviation Group Conference on 19th November 2012 discussed methods and tools used in light aircraft design. A report on the conference by John Edgeley which contains idea to improve safety is available to download.

Currently, the RIN runs an annual general aviation competition called TopNav, uisng a route designed to take about 100 minutes. It is open to all types, including all microlights, helicopters, autogyros and SLMG/TNGs, with a minimum of 2 crew members. Lunch and refreshments are included and landing fees are waived. The competition is run at two locations - TopNav North at Retford, and TopNav South at White Waltham.

The CAA has announced that it is to strengthen its provision of safety information to General Aviation pilots from Spring 2013. Three editions of a revamped version of Clued Up will be distributed to all UK registered holders of PPLs, NPPLs and LAPLs. One edition will be dedicated to Airprox reports formerly collated in the UKAB Bi-Annual Report which will now not be distributed widely. The new arrangement will also see the cessation of the publication of the General Aviaiion Safety Information leaflet (GASIL) but the list of General Aviation Occurrences will still be available on the CAA website. The new arrangements affect the free distribution of GASCo Flight Safety magazine.

The RAeS General Aviation Group aims to encourage innovation in light aviation. The 2012-13 design competiton - run in association with the British Microlight Aircraft Association - offers awards for the design of a low cost, factory built, single seat, Microlight aeroplane, taking advantage of the deregulated, SSDR, category.

FAA issues AD requiring special inspection of control cables of older Cherokee, Saratoga, Lance and Seminole Models. The AD comes into force on 11 March 2013.
