Middle Wallop Airfield
THE DA40 PILOT reports that he was cleared by Middle Wallop for an overhead join to RW35 from the north-east. He was informed that there was ‘one departing the circuit’. His student called ‘overhead’ on his command. He elected to perform a crosswind join, descending to 1500ft QFE over the upwind end of the runway but he did not call this join to ATC. On crossing RW35 upwind end, he saw a Tutor at the start of the downwind leg about 800m away, estimated at circuit height. He stopped descent, passed over the Tutor then followed it downwind.

THE TUTOR PILOT reports that he was in the process of informing his Grading Candidate where the DA40 would be, and at what height for the overhead join, when it appeared about 200m ahead of him at about 1100ft moving from left to right. He made his "downwind to depart" call to ATC and informed them that he was visual with the DA40 and was unclear as to why it was there. The occurrence was discussed with the ATC SATCO on RTB; he informed him that a report had been submitted.

12nm NNE Benson
THE HAWK PILOT reports that he was tasked to perform a flypast at RAF Halton. He had submitted a request to Low-level Booking Cell (LLBC) for an appropriate NOTAM to be published but this was declined. During the transit to RAF Benson at he was in receipt of a reduced Traffic Service. The controller had called glider traffic to the crew, who were looking in their 8 o'clock where they saw 2 gliders slightly lower and at 2- 3 miles. The front seat pilot then saw a white glider directly on the ac nose at approx a quarter of a mile and around 50ft below; he immediately pulled up taking avoiding action.

THE GLIDER PILOT could not be traced.

A SECOND GLIDER PILOT reports that his flight on that day included a transit of the Benson MATZ from northeast to southwest remaining clear of the ATZ. He was in contact with the Benson controller having requested and received a MATZ transit approval and he was squawking an assigned transponder code. The Hawk, he remembers, was on track for Halton. The controller advised him of the Hawk traffic while he was in the Northern stub; he acknowledged the traffic report and sometime later saw what he assumed to be a fast jet moving right to left at 11o'clock low. There was one other glider that he saw in the same area at around this time.

Brize Norton
THE C130 PILOT reports that he was on   recovery to Brize via the Daventry corridor. A Traffic Service was   established and they were instructed to descend from FL70 to FL50 and take up   a direct track to hold in the Brize overhead. They were about 6nm on the 265°   radial from the BZN beacon, heading towards it, and descending through FL60, when they received an amber TCAS contact in close proximity and an associated ‘traffic, traffic’ aural alert. By now they were 5nm from the BZN and passing   FL55, the captain looked out in the direction of the traffic warning and saw   a Tutor aircraft, co-altitude and on a reciprocal heading, displaced to the   left and thought to be about 1nm away. The Captain stopped the descent and   climbed the aircraft in accordance with the RA.

THE TUTOR PILOT reports that he was   level at 6000ft and operating in an area 5nm SW of Brize in Class G airspace   under a Traffic Service from Benson. Benson Approach passed Traffic   Information on traffic 5nm north and 1000ft above, but this was neither sighted, nor reported on the Tutor’s TAS. A further report from ATC advised   the traffic was now 2nm away and this coincided with him becoming visual with   a C130, which appeared to be slightly above, offset to the left and in the descent. He estimated that without course alteration the CPA would be about 0.75nm, so he made a right turn to increase the distance. He recalled the C130 passed   1nm horizontally and slightly below him.

1nm SW Henstridge

THE YAK PILOT reports that he was No2 in close formation on the left wing of his leader. The lead cleared him to depart and as he began to turn away, he looked left and saw a single-engine low winged Tutor-type aircraft 100m away, in a tight turn. The other aircraft appeared to have been on a reciprocal track and looked as though he was taking a steep avoiding-action turn.

THE SR20 PILOT reports that he was in the cruise at 3000ft and approx 2.5nm from Henstridge airfield. He was aware that he needed to remain clear of DA123, which was active.

Bournemouth gave him Traffic Information on traffic 2 o’clock, indicating 2500ft, at a range of 2nm. He reported that he was visual with them to the Bournemouth controller. As the formation reached his 1 o’clock position, the aircraft on the left of the formation started a turn to the left and appeared to start climbing, heading straight for his aircraft. The TAS then gave an audible ‘Traffic, Traffic’ alert. He initiated a right turn, reduced power, and
began a rapid descent in the expectation that the Yak would climb above his level before it reached him. It passed on his left-hand side heading in the opposite direction; he did not know how close it was.

THE SPITFIRE PILOT reports that he had just been looking inside the cockpit to check and adjust the engine and looked out to see a white, light-aircraft slightly above and directly ahead passing left-to-right. He took avoiding action to pass below and behind but noted that if he had not done so the aircraft would not have collided, but would have been very close indeed.

THE GROB 115 PILOT reports that he departed Halfpenny Green on an introduction to navigation training flight, initially climbing in the overhead to 2000ft, circling in the overhead before setting course. He was aware of an aircraft passing to the west of the airfield, he couldn’t recall the exact conversation with ATC, but the student remembered the other pilot requesting Traffic Information and being told about their aircraft departing the airfield before reporting that he would be remaining 5nm west. He was not informed about the Airprox at the time, and he didn’t see the other aircraft at any point.
