NTSB urges use of Traffic Advisory Systems

The US National Transport Safety Board, concerned about two recent mid airs, has issued a Safety Alert: www.ntsb.gov/safety-alerts advocating more use of Traffic Advisory Systems as a supplement to Lookout. Systems available to UK GA at present include FLARM, PilotAware and Portable Collision Warning Systems (PCAS) and it is greatly to be hoped that soon there will be some universal system (ADS perhaps ?) that will be low cost and low consumption. Having used a portable battery operated PCAS for some years your editor finds it to be a valuable frequent reminder to keep looking out assiduously.  Although some aspects can be blanked and it responds only to aircraft with transponders switched on with ‘Altitude’ selected, he would not be without it.
