John has been involved in the aviation industry as a military pilot, commercial pilot, aviation regulator and aviation consultant for over 43 years and has always had a passionate interest in flight safety and the safe operation of aircraft in all aspects of aviation. During his time in the military he had experience of fulfilling roles supporting flight safety such as squadron flight safety officer, flying authorisor and flying supervisor. In his commercial career, as well as being the company head of training, he was also responsible for flight safety education, standards and quality assurance.

In his last job, John worked as a Flight Operations Inspector for a European National Aviation Authority as the Manager of General Aviation Standards and he represented the Authority on the European General Aviation Safety Team, the European Helicopter Safety Team and the International Helicopter Safety Team as an Executive Director. He is also qualified as an air accident investigator for both fixed wing aeroplanes and helicopters and holds current helicopter and fixed wing licences.
